About

Hey! I'm Cort, the Little Red Hen, and I love cookies. And bread. And bar cookies. And dinner...and snacks.

I love to talk about what is working in my kitchen, what worked on my dinner table, and what broke my resolve to kick the sugar habit. If that sounds familiar, this is the place for you. If it doesn't sound familiar, this is still the place for you because I hope to share my enthusiasm for all of that with you.

Sometimes I need to ramble a bit about what I'm thinking about. As a mom to 4 great kids, a wife to a one-of-a-kind husband, a friend, daughter, sister, woman, I've got a lot running through my head at any given moment. Sometimes it is nice to write it down. You know, as an outlet until the babies are bigger and the time is right for grad school or some other ambitious dream.

I like cooking and momming. I'm blessed to do both full time, after teaching elementary school and French for a 5 years. I also run a bit, hike a bit, read a bit, watch a bit too much Doctor Who, Sherlock, Downton, Harry Potter, and Eureka. My soul loves sunlight. I also play handbells once a week in a pretty amazing group. I really don't like putting away the laundry, but such is life.

Why the Little Red Hen? Because one night I was lying in bed and my mind started sprinting. Here is a character I could identify with! A busy hen, with possibly too much to do already, wanting to create something that seems a little out of the ordinary. On the one hand, she is industrious, creative, pro-active, and fun! On the other, she might need to take a step back and realize maybe she's not doing everything all by herself. Maybe it isn't a good idea to eat all the bread by herself. Oh, it turns out there is so much to learn from a story you think you know! That's what I'm hoping to do with myself, and you- maybe there is more to learn and more to become than we've yet realized. Hens are great at gathering their chicks, and Little Red Hen is meant to be a gathering of sorts, too.

I'm so excited to meet you! You're welcome to stay as long as you like.

Bake the bread. Share the slices.

  4. Just found this blog thru a Culinary Teachers group, they referred to your one hour dinner rolls, just made them and put a "Dutch Crunch" topping on a couple of them. My husband likes them better than the rolls I've been making for 40 years!
I too am a Chef Instructor and love your ideas and enthusiasm! I'm not sure if you're still posting- looks like I'm late to the party. Can't wait to try more of your recipes. I did just finish making the Quinoa Chili as well, yum! Thanks, Ann
